Chapter Twelve

A knock on his office door drew Garrett from the case file on his desk. “Come in.”

Tara poked her head in. “You have a visitor.”

Frowning, he glanced at his watch. “Who is it?”

His assistant looked nervous, uncomfortable. “It’s Julius Reeves,” she said, her voice shaky. “I told him you were busy, but he insisted.”

Garrett stood and approached Tara. “Is that all he did?”

Tara was the first person he’d hired when he started his practice. She’d worked for him in Houston and had proved herself invaluable to his business. When he’d decided to move to Atlanta, he offered her a chance to come with him, which she’d politely declined initially. He’d been in Atlanta for two months, struggling with an inept assistant, when she’d contacted him and asked if the offer was still on the table.

They weren’t just employer-employee, they were friends. He’d gone to her wedding and he’d helped her through her divorce. And he’d been an honorary “uncle” and mentor to her teenage son. To see her flustered and nervous made him want to know why.

“Tara,” he prodded. When she met his gaze again, he asked, “What’s wrong?”

She sucked in a deep breath and waved a hand at him. “It’s nothing. But . . .”

“Listen, if he said something to you, or did something, you need to tell me.”

“He didn’t,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s just, he gives me the creeps. That’s all.”

Garrett studied his assistant, noting the slight tremor in her hands when she touched her face. “Are you sure?”

She nodded. “I am.”

He didn’t believe her. Sighing, he told her he’d handle Julius. She slipped out of his office, and he walked to the lobby. Julius sat, one leg crossed over his knee, typing on his phone.

“Julius,” Garrett greeted. This time, he didn’t reach out to shake his hand. “What can I do for you?”

“Where’s your lovely assistant?” Julius asked, looking around, presumably for Tara.

“Gone,” Garrett said simply.

“I wanted to thank her for her help.”

Garrett clenched his teeth. “What can I do for you?” he repeated.

“I need to discuss the meeting with Paige. Can we talk in your office?”

“No.” Garrett had almost told Julius to talk to another crisis manager. But he felt like he’d be leaving Skye in the lurch by doing so. They’d spent a significant amount of time, over the last few days, strategizing their next steps. He didn’t know how long he would last, though.

Julius stepped back. “Excuse me?”

“I’m busy. How about we schedule a call Monday?”

“Do you treat all of your clients this way?” the director asked incredulously. “Maybe I should start looking for someone else, someone who makes time for my case.”

“If that’s what you feel the need to do.” Garrett slipped his hands in his pockets. “But as I said, I’m extremely busy.”

It wasn’t a lie. He’d been holed up in the office all day, managing his increasingly heavy workload. If business continued to pick up, he’d have to consider hiring another associate. His current associate, Marq, had been a great addition to the practice.
